Philly Inspo: How Living in (Sometimes) Sunny Philadelphia has Shaped my Creative Work
Philly has a way of getting under your skin—in the best way. It’s a little gritty, a little smelly, but full of heart. I attended college here, and always somehow made my way back. It’s not just the place I call home—it’s a constant source of creative inspiration.
1. Grit and Authenticity
Philly isn’t trying to impress—and that’s exactly why I love it. The city wears its history proudly, imperfections and all. There’s a raw, unpolished quality here that reminds me to embrace the imperfect in my own work. Every weathered mural and rusted-out corner store sign has a story—and that storytelling shows up in how I approach design: with honesty, character, and a little edge.
2. Vintage Typography Everywhere
One of my favorite things about walking around Philly is the accidental design inspiration. Faded ghost signs on brick buildings, funky old storefront lettering, the old tiled SEPTA walls—it’s all fuel for my creative brain. My camera roll is chock full of “design in the wild” inspiration I can pull up for reference whenever I’m feeling a little stuck. The blend of nostalgia and utilitarian charm has 100% influenced my illustration style.
3. A City with a Sense of Humor
Let’s be real—Philly has a sense of humor. A dry wit mixed with a little sarcasm and a bit of an attitude is the perfect mix. I try to channel that same spirit into my work: a little playful, a little offbeat, and always rooted in something real. Whether it’s a cheeky greeting card or a fun branding project, that Philly-style humor always tends to sneak itself into whatever I create.
4. Creative Community Energy
This city is bursting with creative people doing their thing. From DIY markets and zine fairs to coffee shop pop-ups and artist-run galleries, Philly's creative scene is scrappy, supportive, and deeply local. Being surrounded by that kind of grassroots energy keeps me inspired to keep experimenting and stay true to my own quirky little style.
Final Thoughts: Philly Isn’t Just Where I Live—It’s in the Work
Living in Philadelphia has taught me a lot: how to spot beauty in the unexpected, how to keep things real, and how to design with a little attitude. Whether it’s subtle or loud, the city always finds its way into my illustrations, my designs, and my creative process.
And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.
